Information and knowledge about Computer aided manufacturing has been studied and developed by expertise person and academician as well. The information and knowledge now is available and easy to understand because it has been sumarized and derived. So each group member has pick up three articles and studied about it then came out with idea nad synthesis from those articles. The articles actually is the result from the studied and research by expertise person and the group member need to find out about the problem occur in CAM, the application of CAM, the advantages and the introduction as well from the articles.
2.1 Background
Computer Aided Manufacturing ( CAM ) is a system of using the technology of the computer to assist the the processes involved in manufacturing field. In article written by Yang (2002), Ahn (2002), Lee (2002) and Kim (2002), manufacturing industry depends by the flexibility and complexity of products due to rapid development technology and various preference of customer. The increasing competition between companies has make the production process need to be fast and cost effective with high quality, rapid changes and functionality that meet the market demands. The addition of CAM will help effectively in combined manufacturing process involved become simultaneously in creating products. It is because CAM is able to understand easily the products to be manufactured included the steps needed. Moreover, It also can investigate effects of parameters in making a certain product so that the industry can produce high quality product with minimum cost and time. Meanwhile, Dov Dori (1995) and Karl Tombre (1995) said that engineering paper drawing was major means of design but it needs to be correctly understood by human or machine so that the desired product can be produced. But with CAM-based drawings, the systems knows how to handle 3D objects and not only 2D views only. It also can reconstruct 3D models to 2D views or otherwise. On the other side, David E. Culler (2007) and William Burd (2007) state that before this many companies have to struggle in manufacturing industry. So, CAD/CAM technology can be combined to make the production rate increases and gain effective cost control. CAD/CAM system usage is vital to minimize certain costs which makes it really critical to the industry.
2.2 Problems
From the three journal that i read, i can detect a few problems from CAM. Today, manufacturing technology has gave us a flexible production and assembly system that allow production of tailored product at low cost. However this need adjustment of even these system and the production flow at short intervals. This problems can be settle by dealingwith factory planning and optimized. MSE (manufacturing system engineering) process still poorly formalized and requires significant effort and time for engineer to deal with it. By using this system, company may have a few problems, the cost to buy this software is high, so company must invest some money to buy this software. Then, every year the software must be renew the license, so this also need company to use the money. The software is suitable for high production company such as company that produce automotive part and mould. And then the cost to training wokers to use this software. Company need to invest money to improve their wokers skill to using the software.
2.3 Application of CAM
Park(1997),Chai(1997) and Kim(1997) in their writing says that CAM software can generate part under drawing process through set of dies. With the development of CAD/CAM software produce Pro_Deep as result which was developed in their study where it function is designing process of a deep drawing system for axisymmetric products. The input of CAD/CAM system are the result of Pro_Deep. In deep drawing dies for example in creating motor housing it will begin with sequence drawing for deep drawing part of motor housing. The data of geometry and the processes parameters have been used for the input to the CAD/CAM and the drawings of tool elememt for the deep drawing and blanking are designed automatically by system. Meanwhile Klingstan(1999) and Gullander(1999) says that for new product with high quality and low price now deal with the high market demand which is supported by using models and simulation tools. Both of them also reveals that methodology (strategy) is important in order to handle the demand which is supported by computer aided like Pro E software or CAM software where those things deal with simulation software tool. Simulation actually related to art and science that deal with the process in creating product. Benefit from simulation that possibly can gain is a short cycle time, deflect can be determine easily and no disruption occur in operation line. Wang(2003) Yang(2003) and Yue(2003) in their witting noticed that die casting processes wasn't easy and require good skill and enough capabilities in order to get the high quality product. Concurrent Engineering (CE) process actually has been established along with CAM/CAD/CAE integrated system of die casting where in CE we need to construct 3D part for all component in detail then next step is a design whole set of die casting consist gating, sprue, riser and channel. All of them says that in die casting process produce complex shape and complicated shape and then large scale of CAD/CAM is required to handle this matter for example Pro Engineer CAD/CAM software.
